NVIDIA RTX 3080 10GB VS NVIDIA RTX 2080 ti 11GB – ASUS Strix editions

Can the GeForce RTX 3080 10GB make your games look better and go faster?

Today we decided to compare two kingpins of the GPU world. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 ti 11GB, and the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER 10GB, both by ASUS STRIX.

For this experiment, we have run our games on a 165Hz, 1080p, 0,5ms gaming monitor, the ASUS VG278QR. If you are looking for a great gaming monitor, you just found it. Because let us be honest, if you are willing to buy a PC with cards of that caliber, you will most likely want that high refresh rate monitor to go with it.

Our build for today’s test is the OSHKO RTX Pro (link) with a GPU upgrade. Here are the detailed specifications of the build:

  • Intel Core I7-10700k
  • 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz
  • ASUS Maximus XII Hero
  • 2TB m.2 NVMe 970 Evo PLUS by Samsung
  • 850-watt Platinum PSU

Regarding the games we tested, we have grouped the following in 3 categories:

Battle Royale Fortnite APEX Legend COD Warzone
FPS (esport) CS: GO Overwatch Valorant
AAA Titles Battlefield V Borderland 3 Shadow of the Tomb Raider

FPS IN GAME

We can start by saying that they are both impressive GPU. Playing with any of those two cards during the benchmarking was a real pleasure, particularly playing AAA titles. We just cannot wait to run our benchmarks on 4K monitors. But for now, let look at our results.

In Battle Royale games, the RTX 3080 outperforms the RTX 2080 ti in two of the three games we tested. While Fortnite loses 10% performance with the RTX 3080, APEX legends gains 13% and COD warzone gains 3%.

In FPS games, the RTX 3080 outperforms the RTX 2080 ti in one of the three games we tested. We are seeing CS:GO losing 5%, Valorant losing 6%, while Overwatch gaining an incredible 45% increase in performance, hitting the incredible 385 frames per second.

Finally, we have seen an increase in performance for all AAA titles with the RTX 3080 when compared with the RTX 2080 ti. Battlefield V gains 17% in performance, Borderland gains 13% and Shadow of the Tomb Raider gains 6%.

Note to our fellow PC builders

It is worth noting that to use a Strix version of the RTX 3080 10GB, we needed three 8 pins PCIe cables. If you are planning on building a PC yourself, make sure you get an extra cable somewhere, as most power supplies come with two cables.

CONCLUSION : RTX 3080 will make your AAA titles look much better

The most significant improvement if we look only at numbers comes on Overwatch. It is the most impressive with 45% increase in FPS. However, it was not the most noticeable.  The real joy of the RTX 3080 happens when you are playing AAA titles. For this category, often you’ll get the same amount of frames per second with both cards, but the quality of the image greatly improves.

On games like Death Stranding and RDRII, FPS are respectively at 190 and 145 with both cards. However, details you find in the shadows, light reflections, running rivers and falling waterfalls, grains of snow, are like nothing we have seen before. And this is what will get you deeply immersed in games.

If you are a competitive gamer playing mostly FPS games, or if you are into BR games, it would be hard to recommend going for the upgrade. Playing Valorant at 345 FPS instead of 325 FPS will not get you out of Immortal and make you Radiant.

However, if you are the type of gamers pre ordering AAA games like Cyberpunk and planning to get the best version of every games you play, screaming ‘’YOU ONLY GAME ONCE’’, then the upgrade it is totally worth it.
